Scratch removal and paint correction for Kharkhoda

Why Kharkhoda cars collect scratches
Kharkhoda has changed fast. Work on IMT Kharkhoda has put heavy trucks, dumpers and earth movers on roads that were built for tractors, and the dust from those sites settles on every car in town. On windy days in April and May it arrives as fine grit that you can feel on the bonnet.

The fingernail test

Nail slides over it
The scratch is in the clear coat. A two stage correction will very likely remove it completely.
Nail catches slightly
It is deep in the clear coat or just into the colour. Polishing will make it much fainter, but a trace may remain.
White or grey at the bottom
It has reached the primer. Polishing cannot fix this, it needs touch-up or panel paint.
Bare shiny metal
Repaint is the only fix, and the sooner the better before rust starts.
What machine correction removes
Correction levels the clear coat with a machine polisher, compound and pad until the bottom of the scratch is reached. On shallow marks that means they simply disappear, along with the swirls and haze around them.
The same process deals with sun fade on the roof and bonnet and with the water spots that appear when a car is washed in the afternoon heat.

Thickness first, polish second
Every polishing stage takes off a tiny amount of clear coat, so we never decide the level by eye. A paint gauge reading on each panel shows how much is left. Panels that have been rubbed hard before, or repainted after a small accident, get lighter work.
This matters most for scratches. Chasing one deep line with a heavy cut can thin the clear coat for the whole panel. Sometimes the right answer is to make the scratch much fainter and stop there, and we will explain that before we start.
Do not try to rub out a scratch with toothpaste or a household compound. It usually leaves a hazy patch that is harder to correct than the scratch itself.

Questions people ask
How do I know if my scratch can be polished out?
Run your fingernail across it. If the nail slides over, it is almost always removable. If it catches or you see white underneath, polishing will only reduce it.
Can you remove scratches on just one door?
Yes. Spot correction on one or two panels is common for branch scratches. We then blend the gloss so the panel does not look different from the rest of the car.
Construction dust has made my black car look grey. Is that permanent?
Usually not. Part of it is bonded dust that comes off with clay, and part is fine swirls from wiping it. A wash, decontamination and a two stage correction normally bring the black back.

Will correction remove rust spots?
Surface rust specks from iron dust come off with decontamination. Rust coming through the paint from underneath is a bodywork problem and needs repair first.
How long does scratch removal take?
One or two panels can often be done in a few hours. A full car correction takes from one day to two, depending on the stage and the size of the car.
Can you restore my headlights in the same visit?
Yes. Lenses that have turned yellow or rough from grit and sun are wet sanded, polished clear and sealed against UV. It adds a couple of hours to the job and makes night driving on unlit roads noticeably better.
