Mandi dust is not ordinary dust
Bahalgarh lives around its anaj mandi. If you trade grain, run a shop near the market or farm in the villages around town, your car spends a lot of time parked near heaps of wheat and paddy. The dust there is fine, dry and full of tiny bits of husk and chaff.
It does not just sit on the dashboard. Husk gets caught in fabric seats like small splinters, works into the carpet and slips down the gaps beside the seats. Grain samples in plastic bags tear and spill on the floor. In harvest season, the AC pulls the dust in and blows it straight back out at your face.

Getting husk and chaff out of fabric
A vacuum on its own leaves husk stuck in the weave. We brush the fabric first with stiff rubber brushes to pull the pieces loose, and then vacuum, so they actually come out instead of being pushed deeper.
Once the dry dirt is gone, stains are pre-treated and the seats are cleaned with hot water extraction. Very little water stays in the foam, and the seats are dry within a few hours.
The carpet gets the same brushing and vacuuming before it is shampooed. On cars that go to the mandi daily, we usually find a surprising amount of grain under the front seats.

Seat rails and gaps
Grain, husk and dust removed from under and beside the seats with crevice tools.
AC vents
Each vent brushed and steamed so it stops blowing dust back into the cabin.
Roof liner
Cleaned with a gentle foam, never soaked, because a wet liner can sag.
Carpets and boot
Brushed, vacuumed, shampooed and extracted, including the boot where sacks and samples sit.
Dashboard and glass
Dust wiped off, a matte UV protectant applied, inside glass cleaned streak-free.
Farm mud and the monsoon
After the first rains, the paths out to the fields turn to mud, and so do your shoes. Mud dries hard in the carpet and the cabin picks up a damp, earthy smell that gets worse when the car is closed in the sun.
We break up and vacuum the dried mud first, then wash it out of the carpet with extraction. If a smell has set in, we treat it with an enzyme cleaner or ozone after the source is gone. Our monsoon car care guide has more on keeping the cabin dry through the rains.

Keeping the cabin cleaner through the season
Rubber mats make a big difference in harvest and monsoon months. Keep the windows up and the AC on recirculation while you are near the mandi. Carry grain samples in a closed box rather than a thin bag.

No. We use low-moisture extraction, so the seats are dry or nearly dry by the time you collect the car in the evening.
My SUV has leather seats. Does mandi dust harm them?
Fine dust sits in the grain of the leather and acts like sandpaper every time you slide in and out. We clean it with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush, then condition the leather so it stays supple through the summer heat.
